Sapporo experiences four very distinct seasons, and after moving here from the UK, we can honestly say that each season is so beautiful in its own way. So, how could we possibly pick the best time to visit Sapporo?!
However, based on weather conditions and ease of access, spring and autumn would definitely be the best seasons to visit Sapporo, Japan.
But there’s nuances to each season, and what type of things are possible during those times, so we’ve ranked the best time to visit Sapporo by the month so we can arm you with all the knowledge you need to book your trip to Sapporo at the best time to suit what you’re looking for!
Best Time To Visit Sapporo Japan – Ranked By The Month
1.October
Autumn really is as perfect in Sapporo, Japan as you see online. The landscape turns to a fiery red with oranges, yellows and greens creating the most picturesque landscape. Where better to experience nature during autumn than in Hokkaido?! The turning of the red leaves often happens much earlier in Hokkaido than other parts of Japan.
A few places that are incredible to visit during this time are the Hokkaido Shrine near Maruyama Park, taking in the mountainous views from the TV tower in Odori Park, a day trip to Lake Toya to ride up Mount USU and the botanical gardens at Hokkaido university.
Other things going on:
- Konyousai Festival
- Sweet Potato Festival at Odori Park
- Autumn Illuminations at Nakajima Park
- Shiroi Koibito Park For Halloween
Weather and What To Wear: The weather is starting to cool down, it’s not really rainy and you can really enjoy getting around the city easily. I recommend packing a light coat, and if you’re here towards the end of October, pack some gloves and warmer weather gear for those early mornings and evenings where it can really cool down quickly.

2.May
May is a wonderful time in Sapporo, the weather is finally starting to warm up, and it’s the start of many flower festivals. Early May you catch the end of sakura season in places such as Hiraoka, Maruyama and Nakajima Park. The Lilac Festival hits Odori Park in the middle of the month where the park is filled with the sweet scent of lilacs, and there’s plenty of food and craft stalls to explore.
During the same time, the Tulip festival takes places at Takino Park, which is home to one of the largest displays of tulips, around 230,000 to be precise!
The city is bustling but it’s not as busy as other peak times in the year, such as the Snow Festival which takes place in January, and which brings in a lot of visitors during the winter for the ski season.
It’s one of the most comfortable weather months in Sapporo, and such a nice time to visit.
Other things going on:
- Water rafting in Jozankei onsen town
Weather and What To Wear: It’s just starting to warm up here in Sapporo, but weather can still be quite changeable. Some days can be very warm in the low to mid twenties, or it may be in the mid teens, cloudy with a bit of rain, so you need to pack a mixture of cooler clothing, a light jacket for those in between days, and a hat with plenty of SPF for those really warm days.

3. February
If you love winter sports, February is definitely the best time to visit Sapporo. The snowiest metropolitan in the world, you can expect snow, and a lot of it! Japow season is in full swing and there are so many ski resorts in Hokkaido, with many around the Sapporo area that are much quieter than larger resorts such as Niseko.
There are so many magical experiences that you can only enjoy during this month, with the biggest pull to Sapporo being the Sapporo Snow Festival. This iconic event is approaching its 77th year in operation and with over 200 ice sculptures to explore, and plenty of food stands, it’s an incredible bucket list visit that’s so worth seeing.
It is probably one of the busiest months in Sapporo, so typically transport and hotels are much more expensive during this period of time.
Other things going on:
- Otaru snow light path festival
- Shikotsuko Ice Festival
- Asahikawa Winter Festival
Weather and What To Wear: February is one of the coldest months here in Sapporo with lows of -10 overnight. Snow is guaranteed, cold is guaranteed and it can be one of the snowiest and unpredictable months where snowstorms are concerned which can cause havoc with public transport. It goes without saying, that you need plenty of layers, a thick coat, winter weather gear and a really good pair of snow boots.

4. November
Early November is very similar to October in Sapporo, the red leaves are abundant and the nature is quite simple breathtaking during this very distinct season in Japan.
There can sometimes be flurries of snow towards the end of the month, but often it’s still quite dry and cool so access around Hokkaido by car and on public transport in Sapporo is still very smooth.
Like October, there’s so many stunning places to witness the changing landscape, other places worth visiting during November are Jozankei onsen town, a day trip to Otaru and Takino Park.
Other things going on:
- Munich Christmas Market begins towards the end of November
- White Illumination
Weather and What To Wear: The temperatures are really starting to drop now, and early mornings and evenings are cold. During the end of October to early November, you might also experience the Yuki-Mushi – snow fairies which are tiny little flying bugs which signal the sign that winter, and snow is very nearly on the way. In early November you may also see some snow on higher areas across Hokkaido. Be sure to pack a light, and warm weather jacket, gloves and plenty of layered items.

5. April
Sakura season arrives much later to Hokkaido than mainland Japan, and the sakura is typically in full bloom for a very short period between the end of April and the start of May. If you’re planning a trip to Hokkaido, I definitely recommend one at the tail end of the month, rather than the start where there isn’t as much going on, and the weather is considerably much cooler.
Typically the weather is quite comfortable, and access and getting around the city is a breeze now that the snow has melted. There’s so many wonderful places to witness the changing season and catch a glimpse of the sakura with a little picnic.
Everything also starts to come to life in Odori Park and the benches and much awaited corn wagon makes a return, a staple food in Hokkaido that is a must eat!
Weather and What To Wear: Spring has finally arrived in Sapporo, but it can surprisingly still be very chilly, especially at night and in the early morning. You do have the odd day that’s pleasantly warm though. You’ll definitely want to pack a light weight jacket, and plenty of layers that you can remove as it warms up during the day. I definitely recommend packing gloves for early mornings and evenings where the temperature still drops dramatically, some nights it can still be hovering around 0 degrees.

6. August
A lot of tourists and Japanese flock to Sapporo during August as some respite from the sweltering humidity in mainland Japan. In August, many of the festivities still continue with the Beer Festival, Susukino Matsuri and the traditional Bon Odori taking place.
Jozankei onsen town is also a great place to visit with opportunities for fruit picking, SUP, canoeing, hiking, wine tasting and cycling.
It’s the season of being outdoors, so if you like water sports, hiking and adventures, this is one of the best months for your visit.
Weather and What To Wear: Temperatures make there way up to the high twenties in August, but it’s much more comfortable, and less humid to be in than mainland Japan. Loose layers will keep you cool on your trip, and pack plenty of sun protection, high SPF, sunglasses and a good sun hat. You can purchase lots of UV protection items from places such as Don Quijote too.
7. December
Winter has definitely arrived in Sapporo, and it transforms into a magical wonderland with plenty of snow. Most ski resorts open and with Christmas approaching, it’s just an incredible time to visit Sapporo.
The Munich Christmas Market is one of the best things about December in Sapporo which is on until 25th December. It takes place in the central Odori Park and is filled with stalls selling Christmas items, food, indoor workshops and a chance to meet Santa! If you want to get into the Christmas spirit, this is where to do it.
The seasonal lights also arrive, with the Sapporo White Illumination decorating Odori Park, during the Christmas season they keep the lights on until midnight, and it’s the most magical place to be.
If you love snow, Christmas and everything winter has to offer, this is the best time to visit Sapporo!
Weather and What To Wear: December experiences temperatures between just above minus, to anything up to -10° towards the end of the month, and expect a lot of snow! Pack plenty of warm winter weather gear, a good pair of snow boots and warm essentials such as gloves, hats and scarves to keep you toasty.

8. September
The warmer weather continues through to September, and is one of our favourite months in Sapporo as you can freely explore the city, the weather is that bit more comfortable that late summer and there’s plenty going on.
They host an autumn festival in Odori Park where you can try so many different types of food from all over Hokkaido, there’s some 300 food stalls to choose from!
You might also be able to witness the iconic salmon swimming up stream along the Toyohira river during September.
Weather and What To Wear: Very similar to late spring weather, you can expect temperatures between mid twenties to mid teens throughout September, it’s a really comfortable month to visit Sapporo. Pack a mixture of cool, loose clothing and some warmer layers and a lightweight coat for the evenings, and cooler weather days.
9. July
If you like warm weather, July is a fabulous month to visit Sapporo. It’s peak summer season, and the beer festival takes over Odori Park. They also host a free firework show by the river everyday, and it’s such a fun time to be in this capital of the north.
Lavender and Lillies are in full bloom around the city, I recommend a trip to the hill of the buddha to take in the staggering landscape of the lavender and the buddhas head which beautifully grazes the top of the landscape. Takino Park is worth a day trip to see the Lillies, and it’s easily accessible from the city.
Other things going on:
- Doshin UHB Fireworks
Weather and What To Wear: July brings one of the best weather months to Sapporo with temperatures in the day ranging between mid-high twenties, it has considerably less humidity than mainland Japan which makes it a massive draw during this time. Bring plenty of cool, loose layers with you and sun protection, UV levels are very high during the day.

10. June
Whilst Hokkaido doesn’t experience a true rainy season like mainland Japan, as it’s typically much less humid, weather can still be quite changeable! Although the weather is much warmer and summer is finally here in Sapporo, you can expect scattered thunderstorms, and very heavy rain showers, when they do arrive!
Compared to other months in Sapporo there is much less going on in terms of festivals and flower events, but the city is still just as beautiful. If you like flowers, I recommend a trip to Takino Park for Lillies of the valley, and lilacs are still in bloom around the city in early June.
There’s still a couple of big festivals happening in mid June though which are the Yosakoi Soran Festival and the Hokkaido Shrine Festival which are well worth seeing.
However, if you like hiking, June might be one of the best months for you to come to Sapporo, but please be careful of bears which are more active during this time. Never travel alone, take bells and relevant bear precautions including bear spray and never leave food or rubbish behind.
Weather and What To Wear: It’s consistently warm now with temperatures in the low to mid twenties, pack loose layers, hats and plenty of SPF as the UV levels can be quite high during the day. Do check the weather before leaving for the day to see if you need to bring an umbrella or poncho with you!

11. January
Welcome to the most magical place! January is probably the snowiest month here in Sapporo, in 2026, we had one snowstorm which brought over 50cm of snow, in one night. Snowstorms definitely happen during the winter months, are totally unpredictable but if they hit, they cause transport chaos, which can be incredibly difficult to pre-plan, which is why January is ranked so low in this!
However, if you are drawn to Hokkaido for the Japow season, it probably will be the best month for you to visit. The powder snow is unlike anything else in the world, and there is plenty of it.
There are so many ski resorts in and around Sapporo to explore, and it’s slightly cheaper to visit than in February which brings in the crowds for the Sapporo Snow Festival.
Other things going on:
- Snow Candle Way at Jozankei Shrine
- Takino snow world activities including free snow tubing and snow shoeing
Weather and What To Wear: It’s going to be very cold with temperatures being in the low minuses most day, and there will be a shed load of snow to compete with. So, pack plenty of winter weather gear, and a decent coat and good quality snow boots will be the most important items you pack!

12.March
Why is March ranked last as the best time to visit Sapporo? Because in terms of weather and floor conditions, it can be one of the hardest months to get around on foot. As the month goes on and the weather starts to go up and then dip below freezing, the thawing snow becomes totally lethal underfoot, even in the city the paths can be so dangerous.
It’s the in between stage that locals in Sapporo hate so much, and it’s also one of the less pretty times as the snow is covered with grit and dirt and it’s still there, but not quite warm enough to completely melt.
It’s definitely one of the quietest times to visit, but it’s not the easiest, and as Sapporo is still in the grip of winter, there’s not a lot going on. Most ski resorts in Sapporo shut in the middle of the month, whilst going further afield to places such as Niseko, you can enjoy skiing into April.
Other things going on:
- Takino snow world activities continue through to mid March time
- Sapporo Teine and Kokusai are still open
Weather and What To Wear: It’s still pretty cold in Sapporo, snow is still everywhere and early March it still snows quite regularly. Winter weather gear and a very good pair of snow boots with grips or spikes will be needed, because of the thawing ice and snow.

So, that’s the best time to visit Sapporo, ranked by a local living in Sapporo, by the month. There’s so much going on in Sapporo throughout the year to enjoy, take a look at our itineraries for more inspiration on what to do in Sapporo on your next visit!
