Hokkaido Shrine Festival
June 14 – June 16
The Hokkaido Shrine Festival, also known as the Sapporo Festival, is one of Sapporo’s oldest and most celebrated annual events, with a history spanning more than 100 years.
Held each June, the festival reaches its grand finale on June 16 with a spectacular procession of over 1,000 participants dressed in colourful Heian-period costumes. The parade also features four mikoshi (portable shrines) and eight traditional festival floats.
Beginning at Hokkaido Shrine in Maruyama, the procession makes its way through central Sapporo, passing along the city’s main streets as crowds gather to watch.
Throughout the festival, visitors can enjoy traditional ceremonies at Hokkaido Shrine, browse rows of food and festival stalls, and experience family-friendly attractions. Nakajima Park also hosts a lively festival atmosphere with additional stalls, games, and entertainment, including a popular haunted house.
