SUMMARY:Otaru Snow Light Path Festival
DESCRIPTION:*Please note 2027 dates have not yet been confirmed\, but it typically runs from early to mid February.* \n\n\n\nHeld each February\, the Otaru Snow Light Path Festival (Otaru Yuki Akari no Michi) transforms the historic port town into a magical winter wonderland. Thousands of handmade snow lanterns\, glowing candles\, and beautifully crafted ice sculptures line the streets\, creating one of Hokkaido’s most atmospheric winter events. \n\n\n\nThe festival is free to attend\, with displays spread across several locations throughout Otaru. While wandering between venues\, you’ll also find food stalls and seasonal activities available for an additional cost. Illuminations are typically lit each evening from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm. \n\n\n\nThe festival’s most famous location is Otaru Canal\, where the historic waterway is lined with snow lanterns and candlelit displays. Floating glass buoys carrying flickering candles drift along the canal\, while the surrounding stone warehouses provide a stunning backdrop for an evening stroll. \n\n\n\nAnother popular venue is the Former Temiya Railway Line\, around a 10-minute walk from Otaru Station. The disused railway is transformed into a picturesque half-kilometre trail illuminated by candles\, with intricate ice sculptures\, snow displays\, and family-friendly attractions along the route. \n\n\n\nFor a different perspective\, head up to Mount Tenguyama\, where you’ll find illuminated snow sculptures and spectacular panoramic views across Otaru at night. \n\n\n\nIt usually coincides with the iconic Sapporo Snow Festival\, so if you’re visiting during this time of the year\, try and combine both for an incredible Sapporo itinerary! Otaru is just 40 minutes from Sapporo by direct rapid train\, making it an easy and worthwhile day trip during Hokkaido’s winter season.
